This past December, Colin Kaepernick and world-famous ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s had partnered up in efforts to advance liberation and the well-being of Black and Brown communities.
As 100% of the proceeds of the “Change the Whirled” ice cream flavour would be going towards Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp, Ben & Jerry’s continued their partnership with the ex-NFL quarterback by unveiling a mural in Tampa just ahead of this past weekend’s Super Bowl.
The mural painted by Brandan Bmike Odums celebrates Kaepernick's activism and the Know Your Rights Camp, with the campaign’s “10 Points” painted alongside Tampa youth and volunteers of the camp.
“I Know My Rights.”
“Power to the People.”
These are the messages that can be seen on the shirts of individuals on the mural, alongside Kaepernick raising a fist on the shirt of a young man.
Ben & Jerry’s also allowed members of the Tampa community to visit the mural via a COVID-safe drive-through, where community members could receive a free pint of the ice cream, a family meal, certificate to a local salon and barbershop. Additionally, four community groups each received $5,000 in efforts to continue spreading the campaign’s message.
In addition, Ben & Jerry’s also tossed up a billboard in Tampa to promote the campaign.
