George Armstrong, a Toronto Maple Leafs legend and Hockey Hall of Famer, passed away at the age of 90 on Sunday, and all around the hockey world, fans paid their respect and sent their support to the Armstrong family.
Following the Leafs’ Sunday afternoon win against the Calgary Flames, Matthews opened his media availability by paying his respect to Armstrong and his family.
“He paved the way for guys like us that are trying to accomplish something big here,” said Matthews.
Armstrong played with the Leafs for 21 seasons from 1950 to 1971, winning four Stanley Cups in Toronto.
Obviously, this is an example that the modern day Leafs would like to follow, and before they played on Sunday, Sheldon Keefe spoke to his team about Armstrong and his impact on the franchise that can still be felt today.
