The Toronto Maple Leafs concluded their time with Patrick Marleau on the roster. While he will be fondly remembered in Leaf Nation, it was a deal that made sense for them money-wise. That doesn’t mean it comes without heartache, though.
Marleau made the most of his short tenure with the Buds, quickly and effectively sliding into the role of “team dad”. With so many youngsters shaping up the Leafs core, Marleau was an important figure to have on the team, as an experienced veteran, a proven offensive threat, and a mentor.
His relationship with young superstars Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner was particularly noted. After Marleau was officially onto the next step of his career, Matthews shared out a heartfelt thank you, for mentoring him and for welcoming him into the Marleau family.
They may no longer be teammates, but they will remain friends forever. Or family… father/son… whatever.
Whlie there are many veteran/newcomer relaionships in professional sports, this one was particularly special. If you don’t believe us, just take a look at a few of these highlights.
He will be missed in Leaf Nation, that’s for sure.
