Did you get dressed at home as a kid when you played Little League or liked to stay in your uniform? If you were a home dresser, then you probably can relate to Anthony Rizzo.
The Cubs star first baseman voiced his displeasure by staying in his Cubs gear after the team had to fly to Washington on Wednesday to make up a rainout game against the Nationals from last week.
Wearing eye black, cleats and hat, Rizzo sported the same outfit to Thursday’s afternoon game and didn’t even take it off following the game when the team headed back to O’Hare airport in Chicago.
When asked why he chose to stay in his gear, Rizzo offered up a simple answer.
“I do not have a change of clothes,” Rizzo told Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune.
"I was just kind of having fun throughout a tough stretch in the season," said Rizzo to ESPN. "I mean, we're flying into a state of emergency with rain in the forecast. It's kind of a joke, so why not keep joking around about it and just have fun?
With heavy rains hitting the east coast from Hurricane Florence, the Cubs were supposed to play the Nats on Sunday but the make-up game was rained out. Instead of postponing it to the end of the season, the MLB decided it would be best to do put it on the Cubs’ off day before they host the Reds for a three-game stand at Wrigley starting Friday.
"At the end of the day, our front office, our owner, they have our back," Rizzo said. "We're in a long stretch of games. There's people in MLB that have been on the players' side. They understand the human element of it, and they seem not to care at all. So it is what it is. We can sit here and complain about [it], or we can joke about [it]. I'll take the joking around part—a lot more fun."
The Cubs have now played 24 consecutive days in a row, with no off-day until September 20th. If you think Rizzo and the players should just suck it up, imagine having a game for a month straight, which will be the case for the Cubs once they reach September 20th.
