At this point we all know the story. The majority of people feel as though Aaron Gordon was robbed of winning the 2020 dunk contest. That’s no slight towards Derrick Jones Jr. either as he had some phenomenal throwdowns of his own.
DJJ and Aaron Gordon were tied after two dunks, forcing some extra action during All-Star Saturday Night. During the second round of the dunk-off, Jones Jr. secured a 48, opening the door for an Air Gordon victory.
When Aaron Gordon dunked over the 7 ft 5 in frame of Tacko Fall, it looked like Gordon had secured the W. Clearly, things went a little differently.
Following the shocking result, Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reported that the dunk contest was meant to end in a tie.
If it was mutually agreed upon for the judges to make this a tie, then someone royally screwed up. And it wasn’t Candace Parker or Common.
If the round had ended in a draw, the dunk contest was expected to go to a judge’s choice, where the panel likely would have selected Gordon as the winner. Of course, several other people wanted both dunkers to come away as winners.
Regardless of the end result, it really was an incredible dunk contest.
