As fans in Canada and the United States likely understand, qualifying for the World Cup is no easy thing. There are countries that can go years, even decades, between appearances, and every World Cup in history has seen at least one country make their debut in the tournament.
One of those teams this year is Iceland, which played their first ever World Cup match against Argentina on Saturday. If you want to know just how much that mattered to locals, the team announced the staggering TV turnout on Monday: 99.6 percent of TV viewers in Iceland were watching the World Cup broadcast.
The population of Iceland is just over 334,000, and, obviously, it isn’t a particularly large country. Still, though, that show of support is something else. The match finished in a 1-1 draw, which isn't a bad result at all against one of the tournament's better teams in Argentina.
With that said, it still might not be able to top the story of Mexican fans causing a literal earthquake while celebrating a goal in the team’s miraculous upset win over Germany. Frankly, we’re not sure you’d want to top that.
