Skiing is a lot of fun, and represents one of the favourite winter activities of Canadians. Although people of all shapes, sizes, and ages hit the hills each winter, it is important to remember the dangers of skiing. Every year there are hundreds of injuries attributed to the fast moving, hard-hitting nature of ski crashes. On Saturday, skiers at Camp Fortune near Ottawa were dealt a different kind of danger.

Early in the day the chair lift broke down with close to 140 skiers on board at unreachable distances from help. This left them in limbo for a couple hours while ski patrol worked to rescue them. They used a method called “rope rescue” to lower skiers one-by-one down to the safety of the snowy mountain.

While the incident is scary and never something you would wish for, people generally seemed pleased with the efficient rescue efforts .
