Itβs been 693 days since veteran quarterback Alex Smith last played an NFL game. In that game, Smith suffered a compound fracture in his right leg on a sack.
The gruesome injury looked really bad, but nobody could have predicted the fall out from it.
The fracture caused Smith to develop a flesh-eating disease called necrotizing fasciitis eventually resulting in sepsis. Over time, Smith had a total of 17 different surgeries, including 8 separate occasions where he needed infected tissue removed. Eventually it was determined that he could keep his leg, but the NFL was still a long way away.
Fast forward to present day, and Alex Smith is back in the league. After Dwayne Haskins was demoted to 3rd-string and Kyle Allen left the game with an injury, Smith entered the game to the joy of football fans everywhere.
