Referees have become a constant source of entertainment in hockey because of how often they’re wearing mics in the NHL.
The NFL is probably the closest in terms of how often the audience hears from the referees, but they definitely take a more deadpan approach. In hockey, there can be a lot of emotion in a call (We’re looking at you Wes McCauley) or there can even be see jawing back and forth with the players.
In the Tampa vs. Winnipeg game on Tuesday night, we got a glimpse of that right as referee Kyle Rehman was about to give Cedric Paquette a penalty and his mic was on.
It was a rough night Paquette who ended up with 4 minor penalties on the night.
Obviously, that’s something a coach never wants to see, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Paquette had some extra skating to do at the team’s next practice.
Still, no matter how many penalties they take, we’re not sure anything is going to slow down the Lightning. They ended up winning the game 5-2 anyways.
Oh and when we're talking referees, we have to include a couple Wes McCauley clips.
