Who knows if Sidney Crosby is the best player in the world anymore, but he’s definitely the best player of his generation – so it’s not every day goalies get to make him look a little silly.
Crosby has already shown that he still has his world class mittens with some highlight reel goals this year, and it looked like he was about to get another one against the New York Islanders. Playing 3-on-3 in overtime, Crosby had one if the clearest breakaways you’ll see, but as he pulls the puck back to make his move, Thomas Greiss quickly decided to go with an ultra-aggressive poke check.
Not only did he stop Crosby, but the Islanders then ended up winning the game. But the real winner of the day might be Matt Sunday, the photographer that took this photo.
There are so many details that make this so incredible.
- Sidney Crosby’s face, in utter disbelief
- The narrow margin between where Greiss hit the puck and where Crosby made his move
- The full body of Greiss sprawled out in action
- The fact that while sprawled out, he still has his glove up to potentially make another save
- That you can’t even see the crease, showing how far Greiss really came out for this
There are few greater saves than ultra-aggressive poke checks on a breakaway and shoutout to Matt Sunday for capturing this one perfectly. We’re not sure it’s going to be Gaborik/Hasek big, but it’s a great photo nonetheless.
