We already know Erik Karlsson is a star in the NHL.
According to some reports, he could soon become a Dallas Star. As per AJ Jakubec and Chris Stevenson of TSN 1200 in Ottawa, the Stars as the “front-runner” in the sweepstakes.
Larry Brooks of the New York Post reported on Monday that the Sens have given permission to teams to negotiate an extension with the rumoured teams to be in the mix.
They reportedly include the Tampa Bay Lightning, Vegas Golden Knights, San Jose Sharks and the New York Rangers.
A sign and trade scenario seems like it could be in the works. The Sens offered their franchise defenceman an eight-year, $80 million extension back on Sunday. With Drew Doughty signed to an eight-year $88-million contract, it’s expected that Karlsson will use this as a comparable when negotiating his upcoming contract.
The two-time Norris Trophy winner has one-year left on his current contract that will pay him $7.5-million in 2018/19. There was some speculation that Bobby Ryan’s contract (four years remaining at $7,250,000 per season) was to be packaged along with Karlsson, but the latest reports suggest that’s not the case anymore.
According to Cap Friendly, the Stars have $10,670,001 in cap space with six defencemen signed for next season.
