Alexander Ovechkin has always been a very likeable player in the NHL, but his level of stardom has reached new heights after his Stanley Cup win.
His levels of pure joy and excitement in the last month have really captured fans attention and it’s a good thing they’re appreciating it now because it might not last as long as people would assume. Alexander Ovechkin did a summer interview with NHL.com’s Russian reporter Pavel Lysenkov and alluded to a time in which he may leave the NHL.
When talking about his career, he said “One needs to finish his career where it started. I think so. Therefore, in 2021, when the contract with Washington ends, I will consider all options.”
Fans have reacted accordingly:
The timing of this makes sense for Ovechkin as well, especially if the NHL doesn’t plan to return to the Olympics in 2022.
The thinking here is that by finishing his career where it started, he is talking about playing with Moscow Dynamo (Or just in the KHL in general) where he played his first four years of professional hockey. Of course, the KHL also allowed its players to attend the Olympics in 2018, so if Ovechkin wants to add a gold medal to his resume, that might be the best way to go about it.
Ovechkin would be 35 by the time all of this would happen, and judging by his statements about Gretzky’s record, he likely won’t come close to his record.
