Make up calls in hockey are kind of those things that everyone thinks exists but lack concrete evidence. A ref would never actually admit to doing something like that…

Or would they?

Well, that sure did seem to be the case during Tuesday night’s Predators vs. Red Wings game. An unidentified official was heard saying he wanted to give Nashville a penalty early after Viktor Arvidsson was called for a tripping penalty at 4:56 of the second period. Referees Tim Peel and Kelly Sutherland both worked the game.

Detroit was awarded the only penalty before the call after Adam Erne was dinged for interference at 13:41 of the first period. Nashville finished with four penalties to Detroit’s three but managed to come on top with a 2-0 victory. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and director of officiating Stephen Walkom told The Athletic that the league is investigating the comments.

We’ll have to wait and see how this one pans out but that sure didn’t sound good. Come on stripes!
