There have been a lot of weird signs at sporting events in the past.
Some fans use them as a way to show support while others use them to take a shot at opposing players. For whatever reason, there are fans who also use them to remind the world that Phil Kessel is a two-time Stanley Cup champion.
Kessel himself even responded to a fan’s poster after her sign requested the all-star sniper to give her one of his sticks.
One of the more unique signs we’ve seen was featured in Wednesday night’s game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Toronto Maple Leafs, and it took a surprising shot at Auston Matthews. A fan curiously decided to bring a poster which argued that Matthews thinks a hot dog is a sandwich.
It’s worth noting that Matthews wasn’t in the lineup last night and has been sidelined with a concussion for the past six games, so any sort of shot directed toward him at the moment simply doesn't make sense. Additionally, if any hockey player should be associated with the word “hot dog” on a sign it should be Kessel. After capturing his second Stanley cup in as many years, the Penguins forward posed in an Instagram post beside the Stanley Cup with hot dogs overflowing from the top of it.
The fan’s sign at least didn’t feature any bizarre promises on it. Earlier in the year, an Oilers die-hard brought a sign which stated he would chug his beer every time Edmonton scored. Ironically enough, Edmonton went on to defeat the Blue Jackets 7-2 in Columbus.
The season is still young, so we’re sure the league will feature its share of clever signs throughout its course. But more importantly, is a hot dog a sandwich?
Is it?!
