Hockey fans and reporters have taken numerous shots at the World Junior organizers for the lack of ticket sales throughout the tournament. However, if there’s one fan base that’s been in attendance for just about every game, including ones that don’t include the boys they’re cheering for, it’s the Canadians.
Although Team Canada didn’t get the gold medal matchup against Team USA that they probably would have liked, they still booked a spot in this year’s final game and that’s all that really matters. Since Canada hasn’t won gold at the World Juniors since 2015, you can bet there’s a lot of Canadian hockey fans watching Friday’s game against Sweden, especially in Winnipeg.
Even though the Winnipeg Jets are playing at home against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night, Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman had some fun on Twitter by mentioning that the city is temporarily closed because of the gold medal game.
Considering the Bell MTS Place only holds just over 16,000 fans and Winnipeg’s population is just over 700,000, the city probably is shutdown as the other 684,000 residents take in the World Juniors gold medal game.
