Barry Trotz only spent four seasons as the head coach of the Washington Capitals but what a difference he was able to make in that short period of time.

During his time as the Capitals’ bench boss, his team never finished with less than 100 points and finished first in the division three of those four seasons. Oh yeah, he also helped lead the Caps to their first Stanley Cup title in franchise history.

This past offseason, Trotz started the next chapter of his coaching career as he joined the New York Islanders on a five-year deal. On Friday night, the Islanders were in Washington, D.C., and the former Capitals bench boss, along with former Capitals assistant coach Lane Lambert and former goaltending coach Mitch Korn, were treated to a heartwarming video tribute in their first game back in Washington.

Trotz took in the entire tribute video and got a little emotional while taking it all in. Following the video tribute, Trotz, Lambert and Korn received an incredible standing ovation from the Capitals faithful.

His team came through for him on the emotional night as they ended up blanking the Capitals 2-0 and moved into top spot in the Metropolitan Division.

It’s easy to see why the 56-year-old is one of the most respected coaches in the business. In his four seasons in Washington the Capitals earned a total of 444 points and went 205-89-34 during that span.
