It turns out all Tyler Toffoli needed was a couple of games against his former team to get things going with his new club.
Toffoli went pointless in his first two games with the Montreal Canadiens before picking up his first assist against the Edmonton Oilers, but once he got to face the Vancouver Canucks he started looking the way he did last year…when he was with the Canucks.
In the 28-year-old’s first game back in Vancouver he scored a hat-trick despite Montreal losing the game, 6-5, in a shootout. The very next night he didn’t cool down and he scored another two goals, this time leading the Habs to a 7-3 win.
With his first five goals of the season, and first five goals as a Hab, coming against his former team, the 2014 Stanley Cup champion joined an extremely short list.
Toffoli became just the third player in NHL history to score his first five goals with his new team against his former team, but he’s the only one on the list to do it after the Original 6 era.
The Canadiens play the Canucks one more time this weekend thanks to the North Division schedule, so there’s a chance that he can completely shatter the record and sit alone in first place by Sunday morning.
