And just like that, three-down professional football might be no more.

Nothing is official, but the CFL and XFL are reportedly in talks about ‘exploring opportunities together’, as TSN’s Dave Naylor first reported. Both leagues confirmed the news and it’s unclear how exactly it will happen, but the two leagues might align with each other in the future.

Wow. A bombshell to say the least, and let us remind you… nothing is official yet! But hypothetically speaking, if it did happen… how would the league work? There are certain areas that would need to be addressed such as the size of the football, size of field, and perhaps most importantly, the number of downs per possession. Will there be three, or four? Well, there’s one CFL quarterback who seems to be strongly in favour of sticking to the old rules, and he goes by the name of Trevor Harris. He seems to be fine with sticking to the rules from the ‘OG league.’

With that said, he seems to be in favour of doing whatever needs to be done to grow the game. He, along with other notable from around the league shared their stance on the potential alignment on Twitter.

The Rock teamed up with Dany Garcia and Redbird Capital to purchase the league out of bankruptcy last August. Again, it’s unclear how things are going to work going forward but having the Rock, who suited up for the Stampeders back in the day, potentially running the league is a cool thought. We’ll just have to see if he sticks to three or four downs.
