Major League Baseball was founded 114 years ago in 1903 and is the oldest of the four major professional sports leagues in North America. However, professional baseball’s history goes back even further to 1876, when the league was simply known as the National League which was established with eight charter members.
Over the years we have seen different changes occur throughout the league. From rule changes to the addition of teams, baseball fans have pretty much experienced everything possible. One thing in particular that has changed since the early days and continues to change today are the team uniforms.
Thanks to the fine people over at Fanatics, they created this incredible gif that shows the evolution of baseball uniforms over the years, starting in 1882 and ending in 2016.
They also created a few other gifs that show the evolution of the game over the years, including the difference in ball, bat and glove sizes, as well as the pitching mound and field evolution.
The game has been around for nearly 150 years and changes are still being made. It will be interesting to see what everything looks like 50 years from now.
