Pita Taufatofua was the talk of the opening ceremony in the 2016 Summer Olympics in 2016, and now he marched again in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

This is bizarre for many reasons, especially considering he had never competed in a Winter Olympics before this, his 34th year on earth. Covered in oil and marching with a ta’ovala (a Tongan mat) wrapped around his waist, he became a social media sensation at the 2016 Olympics. Then, he was competing in Taekwondo, a sport he had competed in for most of his life.

In 2016, Taufatofua began training in cross-country skiing with a plan to join the 2018 Olympics. He was able to make the Olympics and is representing Tonga as their only Olympic athlete at these Olympic games.

So, the 2018 Olympics begin with much of the same talk as the 2016 ones. With many people having fun with the Tongan entrance.
