The New York Islanders looked primed and ready to pull off a fantastic Cinderella story.
After the unexpected departure of John Tavares ahead of the season, many counted the Isles down and out before the puck even dropped. Through resilience, goaltending, and perhaps a tinge of spite, the Islanders managed to fight their way into the playoffs comfortably. They met the Pittsburgh Penguins, and while they were the favourite based on the standings, many thought this would be the Pens series.
The Isles swept the Pens. Wow… could they really do it?
Their problem came in the form of an even more Cinderella story than their own. And lemme tell ya, they are a BUNCH of jerks.
The Carolina Hurricanes came into the series and promptly won all four games, only allowing a handful of goals in the process. That makes the Isles only the 9th team in NHL history to pull off a sweep before getting swept away themselves.
It was quite entertaining for those following along with the jokes on Twitter.
