For the first half of the third period it looked like the Montreal Canadiens were going to cruise to a Game 6 victory, but that all changed very quickly in the second half when the Toronto Maple Leafs potted two straight goals to erase the lead and force overtime.

It didn’t get any better for the Habs in the first half of the extra period, as they went nearly half the period without recording a shot on goal, but they made the most of their very few scoring changes in overtime by potting the game-winner.

With the win, the Canadiens made NHL history as they became the first team to ever surrender multi-goal, third-period leads in consecutive games while facing elimination and win each of them.

What’s even wilder about the oldest rivalry in hockey is that they’ve only ever gone to Game 7 in a playoff series twice, with the second time being this upcoming Monday.

Meanwhile for the Leafs, that’s now two straight games where they’ve erased two-goal deficits in the third period only to lose the game in the extra frame.

Montreal owns the better all-time playoff overtime record as they’ve won 83 of 151 games (.549 winning percentage) to Toronto’s 59 wins in 118 games (.504 winning percentage).
