There was once a time where just about every single hockey fan collected trading cards. Year after year they would save up their money and head down to the local hobby shop and purchase as many packs as possible, hoping to come across their favourite player.

It can get pretty repetitive opening pack after pack from set after set and seeing similar looking photos in every single one, so some companies had a little fun and thought outside the box for some of their sets in the early and mid-90’s.

Eric Lindros

Two things hockey fans learned about Eric Lindros early on into his NHL career, he doesn’t want to play for the Quebec Nordiques and he was a master at water-skiing.

Randy Wood

Over the years professional athletes have been told to plan for a life after sports because they won’t be paid to play sports forever and Randy Wood got that message across on his card in the 1992-93 Pinnacle Canadian set.

Cam Neely

Similar to Wood’s card, Cam Neely also provided young hockey fans with a reminder about planning for life after hockey as his card in this set showcased his recent purchase of a restaurant located on Martha’s Vineyard.

Dale Hunter

Hockey fans know the name Dale Hunter pretty well, but they probably didn’t know that he owned a harness horse and co-owned another with his family. Unless you collected the 1992-92 Pinnacle Canadian set, then you figured that out pretty quickly.

Dean Kennedy

Hunter wasn’t the only player who appeared alongside a horse on his card for this set as Dean Kennedy went down a similar route, only his card showcased his rodeo skills, which is how he stayed busy during his offseasons.

These are only some of the MANY hilarious and unique trading cards that were printed during the 1990’s and this is just the first of many posts to come on the subject. If you have any cards that come to mind that you think deserve to be published in a future post, send an email to christian.marin@bellmedia.ca or DM us a photo on Twitter or Instagram.
