According to the IIHF, in 2014 there were 1,444,660 hockey players worldwide and there are usually 713 players in the NHL at any given time.
So, that leaves 1,443,947 hockey players that probably can’t do what Sidney Crosby does in the clip below. If you’re not aware of this, NHL players have immediate access to replays of their own plays on the bench and Crosby might be the player who takes advantage of this most frequently. A clip from the Penguins behind-the-scenes series In The Room shows how Sidney Crosby can use it.
Hockey moves so fast that there is basically a moment that we’d like to replay on every single shift, but basically anyone except people that play in the NHL wouldn’t have this kind of luxury. Some players have a kind of halfway point where they can see their highlights later (Players in the AHL, KHL and other pro leagues), but this kind of immediacy could provide a ton of relief for players mid-game.
There are tons of things that Crosby can do that many people wish they could, but this is the one of the few that is actually possible. Perhaps someday even beer leagues will have some replay access.
Breaking down what happened after every shift would certainly help you learn a little bit more about how you can gain the upper hand on an opponent.
