Hockey players are used to travelling at high speeds. The extra glide allowed by an ice surface allows them to get up to speeds much faster than running, making hockey one of the fastest non-motor sports in the world. Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan McKinnon even beat Canadian professional speed skater and three-time Olympic gold medalist Charles Hamelin in a race.
While a longer race almost certainly would have seen Hamelin overtake McKinnon, the sheer acceleration you can see is impressive. While this proves that hockey players can get the speedometer clicking, it was a different kind of high-speed action shared between two Pittsburgh Penguins teammates on Wednesday
Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are two of the most talented players in the NHL. The two superstars have three Stanley Cup rings apiece and are unquestionably one of the most dangerous one-two punches of all-time. While they are feared on the ice by every team they face, they still make sure to have fun while the skates are off.
On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins shared out a clip that could entertain anyone. Sid and Geno were geared up and ready to square off in a race. Not a footrace, however, not a race on skates or even a race in cars. The future hall of famers found themselves behind the wheel of everyone's favourite hockey vehicle - the Zamboni.
For a light-hearted race between two friends, that was actually pretty intense. They were neck-and-neck for almost the entire race before Malkin just barely managed to squeak out the victory (and almost hit a parked car in doing so.)
While most would agree that Crosby has an edge when it comes to ranking the league's top players, Malkin has proven that he has the edge, although extremely slim, when it comes to hopping behind the wheel in an old-fashioned Zamboni race.
