Basketball fans are anxiously awaiting commissioner Adam Silver to give the green the light for the return of the 2019-20 NBA season but if it were up to Shaq, the whole thing would be called off.
In an interview with For The Win's Mike D. Sykes, II, the Hall of Famer and current Inside The NBA personality explained why he believes the league should just 'scrap the season', noting that any player who wins this year will forever have an asterisk beside their name. He went as far as saying they won't ever get the respect, and insisted everyone should just focus on getting healthy.
The following is an excerpt from For The Win:
MDS II: Do you think it’s possible or reasonable to still have an NBA season at this point?
S: I think we should scrap the season. Everybody go home, get healthy, come back next year. Just scrap the season. Just scrap it. To try and come back now and do a rush playoffs as a player? Any team that wins this year, there’s an asterisk. They’re not going to get the respect. What if a team that’s not really in the mix of things all of a sudden wins with a new playoff format? Nobody is going to respect that. So, scrap it. Worry about the safety of the fans and the people. Come back next year.
Shaq made sure to re-emphasize the whole asterisk thing in a follow up question:
MDS II: As a competitor do you think some of the players would be upset if the season were to just be canceled?
S: Look, I understand how players are feeling. I really do. But any team that gets it done this year, there’s going to be an asterisk on that championship.
Disney World has been reported as a potential landing spot to play games if the NBA were to make a return, but nothing has been set in stone. Some live sporting leagues such as the UFC and Bundesliga have returned to action without fans, however, North America's Big Four (NBA, NHL, NBA and NFL) have remained on hold.
Asterisk or not, we're sure players are eager to get back on the court and compete for a championship. Time will tell if the NBA will eventually return to action this season.
