He may not have scored, but Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner still managed to come away from Game 3 as its unsung hero.

With time expiring, the 21-year-old put it all on the line by getting down to block not one, but two David Pastrnak shots. As the final horn sounded, most of Marner’s teammates bombarded him before visiting goaltender Frederik Andersen in his crease, and he managed to earn the loudest applause of the night from Leaf fans. On Tuesday, he answered questions regarding the sequence and couldn’t have given a better response.

Teammate Auston Matthew was particularly impressed by the play. Matthews, who scored his first of the playoffs in the win, went on to call the play “huge” and motivating.

 

Meanwhile, teammate John Tavares and Marner were just yelling at one another after it happened.

 

Marner finished just 10th on the team in blocked shots during the regular season but proved to be a valuable penalty killer down the stretch. The guy kills penalties, plays the power-play, and managed to lead the team in points. Get this man a cape already!!!!

 

With the win, the Leafs took a 2-1 series lead and are set to host Game 4 on Wednesday night. It’s nice to see Marner was able to come away from Game 3 with his jibs intact!
