Auston Matthews hasn’t forgotten about his wager with his head coach Mike Babcock from the 2017 World Junior Championships.
After the American revealed that Toronto native Mitch Marner and Saskatchewan born forward Tyler Bozak had made a bet over the CFL East Final, he reminded fans that agreeing to a bet with Babcock is a bad idea. Matthews went on to explain that the coach, who is also a passionate Riders fan, still owes him a bottle of wine from their wager over last year’s World Junior Championship Gold Medal game. The American inevitably banked on his home country, and ultimately edged Babs after the USA’s thrilling shootout win.
One of the more under-the-radar parts of the entire joke is that Matthews isn’t legally allowed to drink in the United States. Still, a bet’s a bet and Babcock needs to play his part.
Marner at least made sure to rub the Argos win in the coach’s face, as he approached Babcock and Bozak while wearing an Argos with his hands celebrating in the air.
Perhaps Matthews will take it easy on his bench boss and let the whole thing slide. The 2018 WJC is just around the corner, though, so maybe he’ll find it in his heart to double or nothing in the coming tournament if there’s a proper agreement in place beforehand.
