How much is a superstar worth? We have yet to see the results in real games yet, but already, since signing Manny Machado to a 10-year, $300 million contract two weeks ago, the Padres are already reaping some of the benefits.

According to ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez, the Padres have generated almost $3 million in additional ticket revenue over what they normally make for this time of year. Not a bad way to offset the cost of Machado’s mega-deal!

Obviously, $3 million is just a slice of the $30 million that Machado is banking this year, but it’s a nice little cash-in from the initial hype of signing a big-name free agent. Plus, if the Padres can build a competitive team around Machado — and they have one of the best prospect pools in baseball to do it with — then that’s when they’ll really be able to take advantage.

It can be an easy initial response to balk at some of the numbers that these guys in baseball are making, but in the business of the sport, all of the numbers are big. Although, if Bryce Harper is successfully able to lure Mike Trout over to Philadelphia, then the Phillies might really have some astronomical numbers on their hands.
