The New York Islanders and their fans really, REALLY, wanted their superstar captain John Tavares to re-sign. Unfortunately for Isles Nation, Tavares is packing his bags and heading north of the border to Toronto.
As a result the response has been everywhere from sad to angry to extremely confused from Islanders fans. Just weeks after the Isles seemed to be doing everything right in taking on Lou Lamoriello and Barry Trotz, their team is once again struggling to scratch across an identity.
One man that is particularly depressed is the man that went to a further length than anyone to try and influence JT to stay – Donald Rosner, owner of a Bagel Boss branch in New York.
Rosner offered to deliver bagels to Tavares and his wife, for free, for the rest of his life. That is a hugely dedicated fan, and with his #bagelsfor91 campaign gaining tons of traction, it’s pretty heartbreaking seeing what his response has been to the signing.
While he signed off to wallow a little bit in his Islanders’ huge loss, he also made sure to chime in on the anger coming from other fans. While Rosner is of the side that loves and appreciates what Tavares did for the long-struggling organization, many fans threw the book at their former star. Rosner had enough of it.
Finally, Rosner gives a quick mention of how he had hoped for at least a mention. Either way, the #bagelsfor91 campaign was definitely a very unique and effective form of marketing as well.
