The country of Denmark isn't known for being a hockey hotbed, but if Lars Eller gets his way, perhaps the country of just under six million people could start producing more in the near future.

The Washington Capitals centre announced via his Instagram that he's kickstarted a scholarship in his hometown of Rodovre to give underprivileged kids a chance to thrive in the sport of hockey.

“As a way to give back to my roots, I’m proud to announce the Lars Eller Legatet."

“A scholarship especially designated to help the [underprivileged] kids in my hometown club of Rødovre, Denmark. I believe all children, no matter the income status of their family, deserve a chance to find happiness, community, and personal satisfaction through ice hockey. Just as I was lucky enough to do.”

The former Montreal Canadien was one of seven Danes to play in the NHL this season (Frans Nielsen, Mikkel Boedker, Nikolaj Ehlers, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Frederik Andersen and Patrick Russel) and is one of 13 all-time Danes to play a single game in the NHL.
