The Boston Celtics entered Wednesday night’s contest in a pretty dark place. They were riding a three-game losing skid with the losses coming at the hands of the Miami Heat, Orlando Magic and Brooklyn Nets, and teammates were starting to lose their cool on one another over small things like shot selections.

One Celtics player who took the most heat over the past week, and most of the season for that matter, is point guard Kyrie Irving. From fans taunting him on the road to analysts and reporters doubting his role as a leader, Irving was a man on a mission on Wednesday night as he dropped a team-high 27 points and career-high 18 assists in the victory.

Following the game, the five-time NBA All-Star explained what he learned during the Celtics’ rough patch and talked about how he reached out to former teammate LeBron James to apologize for being the young inexperienced player he once was.

It’s better to realize your mistakes later on in life than not at all and clearly that’s where Irving is at right now.

@kyrieirving learned a lot from @kingjames 🏆

Perhaps things would have worked out differently if he realized this sooner in his career.
