Carey Price has been a hot topic this year, and not for the reason Montreal Canadiens fans would want. Rather than the Price praise they’re used to, Price is in the headlines for the very opposite – his notably poor play.
Price currently holds an ugly .892 save percentage. Of the 23 goalies that have started at least 10 games this season, Price sits 21st (only Jake Allen and Mike Smith have lower marks). He also holds a 3.07 goals against average, which is the 2nd worst of his career after last year’s 3.11 he posted in 49 appearances last season (although part of this is to do with the players in front of him). Before that, his worst was his sophomore season of 2008-09 when he posted a 2.83 GAA.
These are not the kind of numbers anyone was expecting out of a goalie widely considered to be one of the world’s best. He would need to return to form if he hopes to be thought of in the same conversation as guys like, say, Martin Brodeur.
Apparently, Brodeur himself believes that this is just a slump, and stood up for the goaltender in response to a question wondering he thought was #1 in the world.
If anyone knows a thing or two about goaltending, it’s Marty Brodeur. He just happened to be celebrating a first-ballot Hall of Fame achievement thanks in part to being the record holder in categories as prestigious as Wins, Shutouts, and Games Played.
Some Twitter responders didn’t agree with his assessment, but people were quick to shrug those non-believers off.
Others weren’t so confident
Well, if you’re going to have someone vouching for you, one of the undisputed greatest goalies to ever put the pads on certainly would be a top choice. We’ll see if the kind words can motivate Price to get back on track.
