The opening night of the NHL season is here and the Leafs will be missing a key player when they host the Canadiens Wednesday night.
William Nylander, who is currently an RFA, still doesn't have a contract and not having him for the start of the season is the nightmare scenario Toronto fans never thought would become a reality earlier in the summer.
Nobody knows when (if) a deal will get done, but as TSN's Frank Seravalli pointed out, we do know how much money Nylander will be losing for each day he remains without a contract.
Players are paid by the day in the NHL and while that amount doesn't seem like a lot right now, it could add up very quickly if Nylander doesn't sign for another week or month.
Of course, the amount lost per day also depends on the contract he ends up signing, but according to reports, Nylander wants a long-term deal, so it seems like it would surely be in his best interest to get a deal done sooner rather than later.
Until he signs a deal, though, the Leafs are going to have to win without him and they're well equipped to do just that.
