It appeared as though Canada was on track to come away with its first medal during the 1,500 meter short track speed skating event at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics. A familiar face was preparing to defend his gold medal in the event, but not even the great Charles Hamelin was able to come away with a trophy for his home country. In stunning fashion, the Republic of Korea’s own Lim Hyojun was able to earn the victory. Canada’s Samuel Girard also participated in the race but came away empty-handed as well.

Hamelin was actually disqualified for impeding while Girard narrowly missed the podium in fourth place. Neither of the Canucks received the result they were looking for, but fans still showed their support for the decorated athletes on Twitter.

It’s not too late for either Olympian to come away with a medal, as both men will compete in the Men’s 5,000m relay and have an opportunity to win gold on February 22. After the undesirable outcome Hamelin and Girard should both be hungry for a first place finish.
