Jack Eichel hasn’t held much back when it comes to talking about the Buffalo Sabres. The frustrated forward has let it be known that he’s not happy with where the team is at on multiple occasions, but he’s hoping that will all change soon. With Buffalo looking to be taking steps in the right direction, Eichel decided now was the time to make a change himself. For the upcoming 2018-19 campaign, Eichel will be changing his current #15 jersey to his old #9.

It’s an exciting day for Eichel as the switch back to his Boston University number likely marks a new beginning. For a player that doesn’t hold much back, he decided to have a little fun with this most recent change. Unfortunately for him, it didn’t go quite how he’d planned.

Eichel posted a picture to his Instagram Story in which he was wearing his new lucky charm. Being the sneakster that he is, he covered up the number on his jersey with a cool-guy emoji.

Oooo, so mysterious. Unfortunately for Jack he forgot about one thing – his number was still showing, just not from his jersey.

It doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to discover that Eichel’s sporting the #9 on the back of his helmet. Dead giveaway of the very thing Eichel was trying to keep secret. It didn’t take long for fans to call out the error with some hilarious chirps.

Maybe this is part of the reason why they traded fellow #9 Evander Kane away? Meh, probably not. Eichel has since confirmed that #9 will in fact be his new on ice identity.

New season, old number.
