We’re less than a month away from the NHL season and prospects have already started to hit the ice. Each team’s young athletes are using every second of playing time to showcase their goods and prove they might have what it takes to one day play for their organization. 20-year-old goaltender Stuart Skinner capitalized on his most recent opportunity by making a highlight reel save in the Oilers’ Young Stars Classic game against the Winnipeg Jets.
On a two-on-two, Jansen Harkins managed to find teammate Skyler McKenzie wide open in front of the net, and it appeared as though he had an easy tap-in. But seemingly out of nowhere, Stuart sprawled across his crease and managed to snag the shot with his glove.
Larceny.
After playing four years with the Western Hockey League’s Lethbridge Hurricanes, the Edmonton native was selected by the Oilers with the 78th overall pick of the 2017 draft. Skinner finished the game with 26 saves and earned a shutout in his team’s 3-0 victory.
It remains to be seen where Skinner will end up this season, but it’s safe to say his journey with the Oilers has gotten off to a solid start.
