The two have combined to win three of the last six Norris Trophies and oddly enough, both players are up for extensions and could be part of a loaded UFA class in 2019.
Doughty hasn't shied away from answering questions or talking about extensions, negotiations and the possibility of being a free agent, and in a conversation with The Athletic's Craig Custance, he said that he doesn't know what's going to happen.
He did, however, reveal who he'll be talking to about negotiations and how much money he thinks he and Karlsson deserve to make.
Right now, P.K. Subban's contract carries the highest annual cap hit at $9 million, but Doughty believes he and Karlsson deserve more than that and it's hard not to agree with the 27-year-old.
In the candid interview with Custance, Doughty also talked about the possibility of playing for the Leafs:
He also shared an awesome story that sums up his relationship with Mike Babcock from the 2010 Olympics:
“He’s put full trust in me since I was 19 years old at the Olympics. I remember, I’ll never forget. I showed up at the Olympics, he said, ‘Douts, you’re going to start off as the seventh D. The better you play, the more you’re going to play.’ I ended up playing third- or fourth-most minutes. He trusted me from day one. He still has full trust in me.”
As they always are, all eyes with be on Doughty and Karlsson throughout the season, but especially during the summer as the hockey world waits to see if they'll re-sign with their current teams.
