Playing in the World Juniors is a special event for any young hockey player. It is the first real international tournament in which players can represent their country on the international stage, and it’s also a great opportunity to show off what you’ve got to watchful scouts and NHL team brass.
For Donovan Sebrango, he got to flex something in Canada’s tournament opener that he doesn’t usually get to: he scored a goal!
Playing for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL, Sebrango has yet to score a goal in his 51 total games. The defenceman hadn’t scored since playing for the Kitchener Rangers back in 2019-20, in which he scored 6 goals in 56 games.
After the game, Mark Masters spoke with Donovan’s mom Kim, who raised him as a single mother through his hockey development.
While Donovan’s father is Colombian soccer player Eduardo Sebrango, it is Kim that Donovan credits with being most important to his hockey career. Ahead of the tournament, Donovan explained the moment that he told her the news that he had been selected to Canada’s roster.
"She just couldn't believe it ... She's my rock. She's my everything. Growing up, as a single parent, she had to be a father and a mom to me. I owe the world to her and owe her this tournament to come out on top.”
What an incredible moment for the Sebrangos.
