Who has been the best wide receiver over the past 7 or 8 years? Guys like Odell Beckham Jr. and Antonio Brown have had their brilliance shine at times, and other guys have been pretty steady as well, but you would likely be looking at a two-horse race; Julio Jones and DeAndre Hopkins.
Julio and Hopkins are two of the hardest wide outs to cover. They suck in receptions like they’re eating M&Ms, and basically no ball in their vicinity is “uncatchable.”
While they have each shown a little regression at times, they are still two of the most dangerous pass catchers in the game. It’s pretty tough for non-Arizona Cardinals fans to picture them lining up on the same side of the ball with Kyler Murray in the middle. That didn’t stop Hopkins from giving it his best go after news of Jones’ desire to leave Atlanta hit the wire.
Hopkins posted a picture in which he’s hanging out with Cowboys legend turned TV personality Michael Irvin, longtime Cincinnati Bengals star A.J. Green, and, of course, Julio Jones. Green already signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Cards this offseason, so Hopkins is seemingly trying to recruit another from the photo in Julio.
Green isn’t the only big name to sign in Arizona this offseason. James Conner, coming off a bad year, will join Chase Edmonds in the backfield, but nothing was quite as splashy as the Cards signing star defensive end JJ Watt.
Watt became disgruntled with the Houston Texans after… well… a ton of stuff. Hopkins took the opportunity to share out a recruitment post then as well.
While the league let that one slide, seeing as they’re former teammates and all, the league wasn’t about to let Nuk get away with another blatant attempt to recruit without first letting him hear about it. After Hopkins shared the post, not-so-cryptically asking Jones to “remember what they talked about,” other stars from around the league hopped in.
JuJu Smith-Schuster, Davante Adams, Jalen Ramsey, and Mohamed Sanu each piped up in the comments, essentially accusing Hopkins of attempting to make an NFL super team.
While super teams are a lot of fun to watch sometimes, they’re much harder to respect. Just look at how Kevin Durant was treated by the basketball world when he joined the Golden State Warriors. Or how LeBron was treated when he took his talents to South Beach. Or how the Brooklyn Nets are being viewed now.
The NFL clearly doesn’t want to follow the same mold as the NBA in terms of super teams, although the allure of a ring may still be enough to influence Julio to hit up the Cards.
Time will tell.
