Trades are part of the business when you’re a professional athlete, but they never get easier to deal with no matter how many times someone might get traded throughout their career.

For the front office staff, breaking the news to the player who has just been traded is always tough, but for the player who just got traded it’s breaking the news to friends and family that’s the tough part for them.

Connor Brown was selected 156th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and has spent his entire professional career with the Maple Leafs. However, that all changed this summer when the 25-year-old was traded to the Ottawa Senators.

On Tuesday, TSN’s Mark Masters asked Brown how he found out about the trade and how he ended up breaking the news to his teammates, why he decided to keep it quiet from his good friend, Zach Hyman, and who helped him break the news to the guys he called teammates over the years.

Credit to Brown for wanting to keep the news on the D-L since it was his good friend’s big day and didn’t want to ruin it in any way, but that didn’t stop the news from getting to Hyman.

The Toronto, Ontario native scored 43 goals and added 56 assists for 99 points in 253 games with the Maple Leafs and scored 32 goals and 58 assists for 90 points in 110 games with the Toronto Marlies.
