After 19 years in the majors, CC Sabathia is calling it a career.
This was expected for much of the season, but with the Yankees booted from the playoffs by the Astros on Saturday — and an injury would have kept him from playing in the World Series even if they advanced — Sabathia has taken to social media with an emotional message confirming his retirement.
"Through the ups and downs, baseball has always been my home. From Cleveland, to Milwaukee, New York, and everywhere in between, I'm so thankful to have experienced this journey with every teammate past and present,” writes Sabathia. “All I ever wanted was to be a great teammate and win. I'm so proud of this year's team, we fought til the end. Love you guys!"
Sabathia has played 11 seasons with the Yankees, eight with the Indians and a handful of games with the Brewers during a half-season stint in 2008.
Sabathia was pulled in his final appearance during Game 4 of the ALCS due to injury, an unglamorous finish to a great career, but he got every bit of the send-off he deserved from the crowd at Yankee Stadium.
