It hasn’t taken long for Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson to make a name for himself in the NHL, there’s just one issue: no one really knows how to pronounce his name.
For North Americans, the name seems simple. E-LI-AS PET-TER-SON. However, it doesn’t quite sound the same by Swedish standards. Pettersson’s Canucks teammates were asked their opinion on how to say the name, and they gave a whole bunch of different answers. In the end, Elias gave himself a pretty simple nickname.
Petey is it!
Pettersson’s name isn’t an easy one, but we definitely think there are a fewer tougher ones to figure out in the league. How about Winnipeg Jets blue-liner Dustin Byfuglien? Or Rasmus Ristolainen? Or how about his own teammate, Swiss native Sven Baertschi?
It looks like Elias is fitting in Vancouver just fine.
