Bianca Andreescu continues to make history at the US Open.
On Wednesday night, the 19-year-old Mississauga native became the first Canadian woman to reach the US Open semifinal since Carling Bassett-Seguso did it in 1984, and became just the 4th woman in the last 50 years to advance to the semis in her US Open debut, with a win over Elise Mertens in three sets.
Andreescu ended up dropping the first set, but came back firing in the second set before ultimately ending things in the third, and she had a lot of eyes across Canada and North America cheering her on throughout the battle.
Itβs the very first time Andreescu has reached a Grand Slam semifinal in her career, and at this rate it doesnβt look like sheβs going to slow down until she captures her first Grand Slam title.
Andreescu will take on Belinda Bencic on Thursday night.
