Out of every professional athlete in the major four sports, no one is allowed to express themselves creatively through their equipment quite like goalies are. Sure, basketball players have custom sneakers and NFL players have taken their cleat customization game to a whole new level, but the goalie mask stands out as the perfect canvas.
Aside from being larger than footwear, masks also have the obvious advantage of being positioned at a far better focal point. You know...because it's on a goalie's head.
