The Anaheim Ducks were able to snap a seven-game losing streak on Sunday, thanks in large part to a hat trick from defenseman Cam Fowler. His performance, including the game-winning goal in overtime, led the Ducks to a 4-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
In addition to his OT goal, Fowler also potted one during a 4-on-4 stretch in the second period as well as one under regular 5-on-5 conditions. That led to a rather remarkable stat that underscores Fowler’s hat trick.
You know, we think it’s plenty impressive any time a defenseman such as Fowler is able to record a hatty, period. But the statistical quirk just makes it that much more newsworthy — and even more so, when you consider that the only other player to have been recorded accomplishing the feat is Hampus Lindholm, one of Fowler’s teammates and yet another defenseman.
Even harder than a defenseman’s hat trick, however? That’ll be what Barry Trotz once coined as the “goalie hat trick,” which, as of this weekend, Pekka Rinne has somehow accomplished twice in his career.
