The Prudential Center was bumping on Friday after the New Jersey Devils defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in an emotional game on ‘Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night’. Devils forward Brian Boyle, who was recently cleared to play after he was diagnosed with the disease, managed to score the game’s second goal. To the delight of fans, he was later named the game’s first star.
Over the past few weeks, players have been revealing who or what they’re fight for during the cancer awareness period. Numerous NHLers have gladly shared photos and videos to help raise awareness.
Boyle shared who he is fighting for, and his answer was quite unique. Rather than fighting for someone else with the disease, the vet stated that he is battling for his family. The note can be seen on his name plate in the Devils' dressing room.
Pretty emotional stuff.
Boyle was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia over the offseason, but managed to miss just the first ten games of the regular season. In a game against the Edmonton Oilers on November 9th, he scored his first goal of the year.
Some players are unfortunately forced to deal with more adversity than most, but it’s heartwarming to see how close Boyle is with his family. The 32-year-old is married to his wife Lauren Bedford and has a son named Declan. Additionally, he is one of thirteen children, so it's safe to say he has a strong understanding of the importance of family.
Way to keep battling, Brian.
