Just over two years ago, Alex Galchenyuk’s life changed. While attending a Canukah party hosted by Chai Lifeline Montreal – a charity that tries to help out kids that suffer from serious illnesses – the former Habs forward met Charlotte Rose.
According to Charlotte’s mother Lauren, the connection was immediate.
“I brought her over and it was kind of like an instant bond,” Lauren said. “It was so sweet and so genuine.”
Lauren went on to explain to NHL.com that it had been an especially tough month for Charlotte, who suffers from Glycogen Storage Disease. The disorder that affects Charlotte’s ability to create and store energy had taken a toll on the young girl, and it proved to be the perfect time for her to meet a player that would then become her friend. In fact, Charlotte has since taken on the nickname “Girlchenyuk”.
Unfortunately for Charlotte and Alex, a snag was thrown into their bond. Galchenyuk got traded away from the Habs for Max Domi, a trade that could almost not have sent him further away.
As most genuine and strong friendships do, it has stood through the challenge. For Charlotte’s birthday, she got to head down to Arizona to see her friend.
No matter where Galchenyuk’s career takes him, we’re sure that there is one part of it that will always remain consistent. He’ll likely never lose the unlikely friend he made two years ago. He’ll always have that number one fan.
