Hockey players spend the majority of their time with current teammates, but some games present the opportunity to link up with old ones. Ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ game against the Arizona Coyotes on Monday night, Auston Matthews used his Sunday evening off to link up with a few of his old teammates from the U.S. hockey system.
According to TSN’s Kristen Shilton, the San Ramon, California native treated his old friends Christian Fischer and rookie star Clayton Keller to dinner at Jacob’s Steakhouse, the 12th best restaurant in Toronto according to Trip Advisor. When asked about the experience, Fischer expressed that he would eventually return the favor to Matthews. Just not at as luxurious of a restaurant.
Outback is great and all, but Jacob’s is on another level.
The three played together for the U.S. Nationional Under-18 team for eight games in 2014-15 and have each managed to make an imprint in the league thus far. Matthews has already established himself as one of the league’s best center while Keller is a front-runner in the Calder Trophy race.
It’s pretty funny to picture three young adults aged 20 or under dining in style together at one of the city’s finest restaurants when you really think about it. Matthews will more than likely earn $10 million + in his next contract, so it’s really not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Still, it’s the thought that counts, right?
The Leafs will travel to Arizona to take on the Coyotes on December 28, so all fans should make sure to have a reservation at the local Outback on the night of the 27th. You might even want to wear your jersey to the meal, too.
