The Bruins and Hurricanes are set for Game 1 of their playoff series on Thursday night, with a berth to the Stanley Cup Final on the line. There’s nothing quite like playoff hockey, full stop, but when you’re one of the last standing in a field of four, the excitement really kicks into high gear.

So maybe that explains this interaction between Boston sports radio show Toucher & Rich and their guest, Canes beat writer Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News and Observer.

Alexander was on by phone to preview the upcoming series, when co-host Fred Toettcher ends the call as Alexander was mid-thought. His reason? “I can’t listen to a guy with a Southern accent talk about hockey.” This happens around the 20:55 mark.

Warning: NSFW language follows.

This seems like a weird trigger! Obviously, hockey is more geographically associated with certain areas moreso than others, but you know, there is hockey in the south. One of those team, the Carolina Hurricanes, actually happens to doing quite well!

The Hurricanes entered the playoffs as a bit of an underdog, although also as one of the hottest teams in the league, and it’s fairly impressive that they remain alive to this point. And then there’s also their Storm Surge tradition, which, while maybe a bit controversial, is energizing Hurricanes fans like never before.

But, of course, this is playoff hockey, and what would playoff hockey be without a bit of sniping between fanbases? Alexander got the last word on Toucher and Rich, though.
